Suburban SEPTA Services at Risk as Union Strike Deadline Nears

SEPTA train in Philadelphia

SEPTA’s suburban transit services could come to a halt if SMART Local 1594, representing Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery county workers, strikes at midnight on Monday. The union seeks better pay and safety measures. This comes as similar negotiations continue with Philadelphia’s TWU Local 234. With no backup plan for suburban services and a $240 million budget deficit complicating wage talks, commuters are bracing for potential disruptions.

Nonprofits and County Join Forces to Tackle Winter Homelessness Crisis

Montgomery County has expanded its winter shelter program, adding four new Code Blue sites with 186 beds to support homeless residents. The initiative provides emergency services during freezing conditions, with shelters operating in Lansdale, Norristown, Pennsburg, Plymouth Meeting, and Pottstown. Rising homelessness across the county highlights the need for year-round emergency shelters, as officials work with nonprofits to fund critical services and supplies.

Goodbye Passwords? Passkeys Are Changing Online Security

Laptop in close-up

Passkeys are emerging as a secure and convenient alternative to passwords, relying on biometrics, PINs, and cryptographic technology for authentication. With support from major platforms like Google, Apple, and Amazon, passkeys enhance security by eliminating risks like phishing and brute-force attacks. Setting them up is straightforward on many services, though some may require additional steps. Users are encouraged to adopt passkeys for essential accounts and maintain backups for redundancy.
